Over the past few years, New York real-estate agent Matthew Lesser has rebuffed buyers, declined showings and generally tried to stall whenever anyone wanted to see inside a 40-foot-wide townhouse under construction in New York’s West Village.

“We can talk about it, but we’re not getting in until [it’s] complete,” he would say, upholding a decision by the developer not to leave too much up to the buyer’s imagination.
